Blu-ray: the 5 Year Countdown

I know that this is the way of technology, but it was still a little shocking to hear Andy Griffiths (go ahead, whistle, you know you want to) of Samsung say that Blu-ray has 5 years left as a viable media format.

Really? All of that warring and hooting and hollering between Toshiba and Sony for what amounts to be 5 years? I guess we get to look forward to another Sony proprietary after that. Joy.

But like I said, nobody should be surprised, though DVD’s have had quite a run and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. It’s just the way these things go, for good or ill.

What do you think is next? A lot of people are putting their money down on digital downloads, but I don’t know if I buy that yet.

  1. Yeah, it really is pretty wild. You’re just going to disenfranchise consumers to the whole deal if you keep pulling the rug out from under them after they adopt your tech. It’s kind of ridiculous, though I guess neither corporation nor consumers have learned their lessons yet.

  2. I don’t buy blu ray, I don’t have an HD TV and I don’t see the benefit of paying more money for something that is incrementally better (to me anyway).

    I stick with DVD.

Too many times, us techno nerds are so gung ho about new technology that it seems we just cant’ WAIT to give these people more of our money.

  3. Well, I’d argue that point with you about HDTV (TOTALLY worth it), but for Blu ray I only purchase movies that I know I’ll be watching a lot or where you can really see the benefits of it.

DVD’s are fine, especially over HDMI on the PS3, which has some stupid good upconversion.

  4. Ill agree with Eddy, HDTV is worth it (Though apparently in japan they have something 10x as good as 1080P) Things are always being outdated and in electronics its true too. HD though is something to cherish in the gamin industry. Better looking is better

Oh, I meant that since I don’t have an HDTV, I don’t buy blu ray. I know HDTV looks better, but my money is too precious right now to go buy a TV just so I can go buy more expensive movies, lol.

I will get there, but I am not an early adopter at all.

  6. What about USB, and by that I mean flash memory. USB3 is due out within the 5 years of blue ray’s reaming lifespan, and USB3 is supposed to be un-presidentially fast. Also given how flash memory is becoming cheaper…just a possibility.

That’s true, too. I know that Ghostbusters is going to be released over USB sometime soon, so you may be on to something. I mean, if most consoles or video players have a USB, you can store something on there at high res and then just play it, since it’s becoming cheap enough.

I wonder how you’d store all of those USB things?
