Spore Not Perfect, Internet Poops Bricks

Sometimes, the Internet’s view of game reviews really just drives me crazy. And not just normal crazy, but bat-crap-freaking-loco.  Take this news, for instance, that Spore is getting less than stellar reviews out of Europe. In fact, some media outlets like German mag PC Games are going as low as an appalling score of 73%. Out of 100, even!

The sky isn’t just falling. Bitch done collapsed.

I’ve never understood the kind of petri dish that some in our gaming culture subsist in these days. Where I come from, 7/10 is above average, if not pretty good, in the grand scheme of things. Heck, even 5 or 6 out of 10 isn’t terrible. Hopefully, when we start doing some GamerSushi reviews, we can help break the mold a little.

What I find more disconcerting than all of the shocking news of reviews in the dreaded sevens (say it isn’t so!) is that Spore doesn’t have an auto-save feature. That in my mind is not just a grievous error, but a virtual sin.

Personally, I’m not all that excited about Spore to begin with. I was pumped when they first debuted it at E3 1889 (or whenever it was), but since then, it’s kind of lost its luster for me.

So I guess there are two threads of discussion here: what do you guys think about Spore and are you excited about it? What do you think of the way that people review games and the way they view scoring? Sometimes, it seems like the darn scale starts at 7/10 in people’s eyes.

  1. Someone I know said he spent about 2 hours creating a ‘awesome’ creature but then suddenly the computer failed on him. Sad…

    Btw, love that picture!

  2. Yeah, when I was talking about how great Uncharted is and how much fun I had…I would give it a 7.

People expect 9’s or 10’s everytime.

The Force Unleashed has gotten some 7’s and that is probably about right.

And I CAN’T WAIT TO PLAY IT!

  3. Yeah, it’s just funny that people don’t want reviewers to lie to them, but they’ll throw a hissy whenever something they are excited about gets reviewed poorly.

  4. haha i think the game came over with columbus. but ya, people are definitly rating things way to high. like gta 4. i mean a good game and all, but for ign to give it a 10. its not perfect with absolutley no flaws. and even a 6 should be considered decent. i mean, if i get a 66 on my report card, im not all tht disapointed.

IGN and other reviewers were careful to say that a 10 is not perfect and not flawless.

Hell, Halo 3 got a 10 from Egm and I didn’t hear half as much complaining as about GTA4.

    A 5 is average, a 10 is AMAZING.

Why is that hard for people to understand?

I think thats why EGM went to a letter scale like grade school, b/c people are familiar with that.
